Intervening in Inappropriate Behavior

Inappropriate behavior is a hot topic in the media and a pressing issue in some organizations. Often, when a situation escalates, the question arises: “Why didn’t anyone intervene earlier?” What causes people—despite their prior certainty that they would act against injustice or misconduct—to freeze, look away, or rationalize the behavior at the critical moment?

There are numerous examples. The childcare benefits scandal is one of them. In its aftermath, during the parliamentary inquiry, the focus was often on assigning blame and minimizing one’s own role in the debacle. In this training, we aim to delve deeper. We examine why people so frequently look the other way. We explore concepts such as the “bystander effect” and “cognitive dissonance,” focusing specifically on our field: inappropriate behavior or undesirable conduct.

As a result of this training, confidential counselors will be better equipped to educate colleagues on recognizing inappropriate behavior in the workplace and how to intervene effectively. They will also be more adept at identifying such behavior promptly and, more importantly, taking action.

After the training, participants will have knowledge of:

  • The bystander effect: why people fail to intervene.

  • Cognitive dissonance: how our brains handle conflicting situations.

  • Interventions and their effectiveness.

  • Reasons why people do choose to intervene in cases of inappropriate workplace behavior.

Participants will leave the training with increased confidence to act when inappropriate behavior occurs in the workplace, through practicing the following skills during the training:

  • Recognizing and acknowledging unsafe situations in the workplace.

  • Experiencing or analyzing an unsafe situation in a role-play and reasoning how appropriate intervention could have occurred.

The training is conducted by Andrea Rijna

Andrea is not a trainer who allows you to passively earn your professional education points. The training is not solely about knowledge transfer but also about ‘experiencing’ through practice. This can be personally challenging, possibly confrontational for some, as Andrea believes that training should also involve stepping into discomfort.
